ESP8266 WiFI LED controller hack

ESP8266 WiFI LED controller hack:

P1020335

Andreas Hölldorfer of ChaozLabs wrote an article detailing how he hacked the cheap WiFi LED controller:

This pictures show the PCB. As you can see there are pins labeled as RX,TX,GND,3.3V. I simply connected an USB-Serial converter to the pins. The two other pins are GND and GPIO0. If you set a jumper between this two pins, the controller starts in bootloader mode.

The chip above is a NXP HC245, a 3-state Octal bus transceiver. It is used to drive the N-channel MOSFETS (20N06L – 20 A, 60 V, N−Channel DPAK).

The power supply is a 2 stage design. A AOZ1212 3A Simple Buck Regulator to convert the input voltage to about 5V and an AMS1117 low dropout voltage regulator to get 3.3V.

Ultimate classic game console joystick to USB adapter

Ultimate classic game console joystick to USB adapter:

FinalVersion

Matthew Heironimus posted a step by step guide of his “ultimate” classic game console joystick to USB adapter build:

This article describes how to use an Arduino Leonardo or Arduino Micro to make up to three classic console joysticks (e.g. Atari 2600, ColecoVision, and possibly others) available to a modern computer (e.g. Windows PC, Mac, or Linux). This adapter can be placed into one of the following modes:

* Joystick Mode

Each of the three classic console joysticks appear as a Game Controller.
* ADAMEm Mode

Configured for use with the ADAMEm emulator. Joystick 1’s direction and fire buttons are mapped to a Game Controller and the keypad is mapped to the keyboard’s numeric keypad keys. Joystick 2 is mapped to keyboard keys (e.g. up arrow key, down arrow key, etc.). This allows ADAMEm to support two player games. Joystick 3 is not used in this mode.
* MAME Mode

Configured for use with the MAME emulator. All three joysticks’ direction and fire buttons are mapped to the three Game Controllers. The numeric keys on all three joysticks are mapped to keyboard keys.

Augmenting Human Vision With Polarimetric Cameras

Augmenting Human Vision With Polarimetric Cameras:

Light is just a wave, and the wavelength of light determines its color and determines if it can cook food like microwaves, or if it can see through skin like x-rays. There’s another property of waves human’s don’t experience much: polarization, or if the light wave is going up and down, side to side, or anywhere in between.

[David Prutchi]’s project for the Hackaday Prize was like many projects – a simple, novel idea that’s easy and relatively cheap to implement. It’s a polarimetric camera meant to see what humans can’t. By seeing the world in polarized light, the DOLPi can see landmines, cancerous tissue, and air pollution using only a Raspberry Pi and a few Python scripts He gave a talk at this year’s Hackaday SuperConference about polarization cameras and the DOLPi project. After enjoying the video, join us after the break for more details.

While cameras and the human eye can see different wavelengths or colors of light, they can’t easily detect polarization. [David] did remind us that the human eye is capable of detecting polarization, due to a phenomenon called Haidinger’s brush. He did, however, challenge everyone to tell the difference between two pieces of polarizing film. No one took him up on that challenge.

While traditional cameras and the human eye can’t easily see polarization, bees use polarization to find flowers, and cuttlefish use polarization to find prey. The uses for a polarization camera range from finding landmines, seeing underwater, detecting cancerous tissue, and seeing airborne pollutants. It’s a fascinating range of uses from something as simple as a cell phone camera, servo, and a few sheets of polarization film, and DOLPi makes it real.

A car, as seen with polarized light mapped to colors
A car, as seen with polarized light mapped to colors

The hardware part of the DOLPi is actually pretty simple – it’s really just a Raspberry Pi, camera module, and either an electro-optic polarization modulator (somewhat pricey), or a servo and paper disk with sheets of polarization film taped on at different angles (very inexpensive).

On the software side of things, [David] has a Raspberry Pi take a picture with a camera module, change the polarization filter, take another picture, and eventually combine all of these images into a false-color image with different colors mapped to different polarizations of light.

It’s a relatively simple project – anyone can build a polarization camera and run a few bits of software. But it has the potential to make a huge impact with a lot of great humanitarian uses, seeing things the human eye cannot.

World’s Brightest Flashlight: Brilliant 1000-Watt DIY Lantern

World’s Brightest Flashlight: Brilliant 1000-Watt DIY Lantern: [ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

highyieldledlight

Lighting up the night sky like artificial lightning, this incredible homemade lamp boasts a 90,000-lumen output (over 100 times that of a typical Maglite) that would put the flashiest high-beams on dark roads to shame, making nighttime scenes look uncannily daylit.

Constructed by RCTestFlight and published on YouTube, the project consists of ten 100-watt LEDs mounted on a heatsink and powered by twin 8 amp-hour, lithium-polymer batteries (about the equivalent energy of 10 mobile phones).

night bright light

In the embedded video, you can see comparisons between car lights, streetlights, other handheld lamps and this flashlight, as well as demonstrations of lighting up clouds and mountains at a distance. Even the short-exposure shots reveal an incredible degree of brightness.

night handheld led flashlight

The rig uses ten 100-watt LED chips in a row, each connected to a large heatsink with bolts and thermal grease to help the heat transfer, each component tied to its own driver. Each LED has its own lens focusing light projection at around 60 degrees.

night flashlight worlds brightest

Made to burn fast and bright, the projection lifespan is accordingly limited: it can only run for about ten minutes and gets hot even faster than that. Cooling fans would be useful if longer blasts were needed, but for short bursts the system holds up just fine.

blindinglight

It shines bright in part due to LEDs trumping halogens, but also the various engineering details that help optimize for power and heat. The device can turn well-lit rooms into sun-bright spaces and even outdoors, at closer than 100 feet, it is basically blinding.

Digital thermometer based on DS18B20

Digital thermometer based on DS18B20:

This is easy to build a simple digital thermometer with only two parts – microcontroller, temperature sensor and display. Here is one small project that can be put together in less than hour.

led_thermo

It is based on PIC16F628A which reads temperature from DS18B20 1-wire digital sensor. Temperature is displayed on four seven segment display which can output temperature values from -55 to 125 degrees. Probably most work that needs to be done here is interfacing the display which cathodes are switched though BC337 transistor keys. The keying is needed to dynamically switch between separate digits. This way less microcontroller pins are required. Source code is ready for download so all you need is to plug pickit3 or other programmer and have temperature output immediately.
